WE´RE HERE!!!!!!

The flight and train ride were good but boy was it a long time before we got to sleep...almost went 30 hours before we got to the hotel. Pamplona is gorgeous. Liz and Rose being the youngins´ were up at 5:30 to get our first cafe con leche and Liz figured out a game to play. My face hurt so bad from laughing so much as Liz was "eldest of the day". I was yelling uncle after only a half hour. Bye til next post. Goat

This is LIz boy DID I HAVE JETLAG BAD. BUT ALL IS GOOD NOW. PAMPLONA IS DELIGHTFUL. I AM SO GLAD I CAME . I LOVE SPAIN AND THE PEOPLE AND IT ALL.
WE CAN´T POST PICTURES BUT WE´RE GETTING PLENTY OF GOOD ONES.
LOVE YOU ALL.

Hi there.....it´s Mariann. We got here and to Pamplona after a loooong plane flight (lots of noise on the plane!) and a delightful train ride (I slept most of the way!). We had a beautiful walk in the old city of Pamplona last night and only a slightly circuitous walk home (I problably won´t be the map reader late at night again). This morning we were lovingly awoken by the two young uns who were raring to go at o'dark 30 this morning. Thankfully, they let us two old ones sleep until the appointed hour and we have been laughing our way around this morning. Think it´s just a snapshot of what is yet to come.
Love to all and more at the next post. Mariann

fran signing in- We are gathering supplies for a picnic in the park before our hired taxi whisks us off to Ronsesvilles. There we´ll have our first refugio night and Sat. morning we are off on our Camino journey. We will post as often as we can. HUGS AND KISSES YOUR WAY.

The Ladies Made It Safely

All is well and they're looking forward to some much needed sleep.

The Traveling Blog of The Ladies of Spain

Okay Zeets family and all those who love the LOS. Here's my idea. At Grandpa Vinko's funeral we had a wonderful and fully hilarious reading of a traveling letter that JoJo started about the adventures of Vinko. Wouldn't it be great if I could start the adventures of the LOS beginning with the plane ride than each family member could add to it. Now I know you all are not allow to make post, but you could email me your contribution and I could post it on the blog. I'm not sure which order to go in so I'm going to leave that up to The Eldest. I'm also not sure who would like to take part, cousinss, Elkowitzs?

I have a busy day today with a staff meeting at one of our co-ops and some volunteering at a horse ranch that services handicapped individuals, but I promise I'll get the first post up with 24 hours. That gives you time to let me know who all would like to part in this grand adventure. :)

Have a great day. Love ya.

Going crazy

I weighed yesterday. It was 13 1/2. Today it's 17 1/2. With water 21 1/2. What the heck happened? What weighed 4# that I missed putting in? I must have misread the number. Man, this is not good. Help!

Just playing

Happiness

"I want you to be happy" my loving spouse just said as he presented me with:
  1. 2 Hershey bars (4.2 oz each)
  2. 2 ice creams (1/2 gallon each)
  3. 1 lb. roasted peanuts
  4. 2 lbs cashews
  5. 3 bags of popcorn

"because you're leaving soon". I'm in shock. I can't eat it all but boy do I have a sweet tooth that could given just a little more time. Oh well. Nuts anyone?

It's Here

The "foreign" cell phone has arrived. For the date you put the day first then the month. It took me a good 15 minutes to catch on to that one. I'll give you the number at Lizzy's. Remember, Spain is 7 hours ahead of us.

Geeze, I'm like water on a hot griddle!! Oh, oh, oh

For the Record

Control panel shows overheat.
Taxi back to fix problem.
Solution - turn off that gauge.
Why? "Not an essential gauge".
Take off. BIG oops.
STUPID!!!
Lord save us from stupid people.
Impossible.
Bottom line: Bring It On. Camino Here We Come!

P.S. Thanks for listening again.

TEAM LOS

These boots are made for walking and in one week these boots are going to walk all over Spain.
I already added my sweat to the towel Mariann made for us. I love it Mariann, thanks!
No we don't have to share , she made one for each of us.
GO TEAM LOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am so pumped for the gold waiting for us in Santiago!!!!!!!!!!!

Equal air-time!!

Georgia this morning being cute. She is on the cusp of crawling and loves waving hi and bye. Robin and Cary will email me weekly photos while I'm gone- they'll probably both be walking and talking when I return. Both girls recorded my voice mail of the song I sing to them everyday-they'll play it for them so they don't forget their Oma!

Consummate

Shopper that is. Shopping list:
1. One leather purse
2. One bigger Camino tile
Short list. That's the Camino way.

Quandary

I'm sitting here having my coffee, reading the entry for today's meditation in my book and I need help. I was going to rip out the pages for September. But now I don't know. Is anyone taking a book with them?

I know, I could reduce-copy the pages. Thanks for helping.

moving day

My baby moves today. So my walking consists of stairs and lifting for today.
He's on the second floor, so not to bad.

Most Exciting?

Which will be the most exciting....the day we begin our walk or the day we arrive in Santiago?
Have been trying to comtemplate that and can't come up with the answer.

I'm back!

We had a great weekend in St. Louis. Even got walking in- the botanical gardens and the downtown streets of St. L. The upper-respiratory crud is improving and this mornings walk was in the 50's!!!! My new boots are awesome and I can't wait to put them down on Spanish soil!! Reminder to my fellow pilgrims- the only thing you can't buy or replace in Spain is your passport; so those of us traveling to chicago can't forget it.
This final week will be busy with things to do, family and friends to visit with, clothes to wash, meals to prepare (not in my case-Geo perfers I have minimal food in frig and he'll shop and cook when he needs to- God I love him!!)and in Marian and rich's case possibly batten-down-the-hatches!!! Relax, don't push or overdo the walking- we will take each day as it comes and as a group decide our plans for it. See you next Tues.!!!!!!!!

Really Early

is when I walked to try out my flashlights. The first one was worthless. Absolutely not enough light. The second one is definitely a keeper. Petzl MYO XP "Hands Free Lighting". 65m.

Tags

They're done. Turned out ok. I like the colors. And I like how Lizzy's bull really gets the "grump" across. The fabric glue I got didn't work so the red is not stuck to anything. Liz, do you have some red yarn for the tag? I know why crafts are not my bag. Nothing but frustration. I need the tag now!

Sunday

You mean it isn't Saturday? Now I'm in trouble! I did my almost final to do list and put in an extra day. Tick.Tick.Tick....and we're off!!!!!

horse show

Darren's friend invited us to a show she was in. It was such fun to watch, she raced 2 horses

BULL LAPEL PINS

I ended up making them. Found the lapel pins in the jewelry making department.

So we each have a Liz's original painted Bull pin.

Doctor's orders...

My resident physician told me to "take a day off " from walking and give my chest and head a day to clear . I came back from AZ with a nasty cold -compliments from beautiful Sage who greets those she loves with wet, slobbery kisses on the face!! I'm still in my jammies and have already had one nap, a long hot bubble-bath and lots of tea with honey and lemon. I wasn't feeling bad when i walked this week, but George said a day off was in order.
I am tweking the contents of my backback today and plan on walking with it full the remainder of my walks before we leave. Our weather has been gorgeous- low 60's in the morning when I walk!
We are off to St. Louis this weekend to celebrate our 35th wedding anniv. I'll be back blogging Sun.night.

Ahh Friday

Backyard of an Iowa child.

Black sheep but I still like the music. Great beat for walking in this one. Have I improved Fran?

CHECK THIS OUT

It's going to be a movie.

It was in this mornings paper. Chicago tribune.

BULLS

Boy, do we have bulls in my area.
A whole TEAM of them.

wisdom

from the anonymous sister:
"No one can impart elderly wisdom unless they are actually elderly. And it's an understood law 65 is elderly. NO IMPOSTERS.''

LIMO PICKUP

We'll be going to the airport in style.

A stretch limo.

It's a pickup time of 1:00-1:15 on our departure date.

My honey will pick us up on the trip home, Goat.

Mailing boxes and envelopes

I picked these up at the post office.

If you need to mail stuff home from my house. The envelope is a flat rate-$4.80

The box is by the weight and I also got flat rate boxes. Flat rate box is $9.80.

Let my know if you'ld need others, and I can pick them up.

ROTC

For the enjoyment of all, please observe the following.

Rules of the Camino
  1. Do not wake Goat up from her nap for supper if she's worn the GPA tag that day. (Fran knew this one instinctively...thanks mom)
  2. Fran is the eldest therefore all matters that end in a tie vote...she gets her way.
  3. When in doubt about the way to go listen to Fran. She has the maps plus FITE.
  4. All decisions on when to stop for the day will be discussed for a minumum of 10 minutes over a cafe con leche (coffee with cream).
  5. Taking God's name in vain will not be tolerated (we're pilgrims for godsake).
  6. Spitting will not be tolerated (other than the morning huddle cheer thing).
  7. The pace will be dictated by Goat...oops, that was a slip.
  8. We will allow the natural rhythm of the Camino to set the pace, working in harmony with our bodies and spirit.
  9. Follow the golden rule "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
  10. God bless Mom who will be looking down on us from heaven above.

Ideas?

Anyone have any fun games we can play while on the Camino? I thought of one......
ELDEST OF THE DAY
Object of game: To impart as much wisdom in one day without any projectiles being projected your way.

Rain on the parade

You may notice that I've edited a few of the posts as of late. I need to make you aware that this blog is not private and people "stumble" across it in different ways. Please do not use it as a mode to communicate detailed, private information. This is a safety precaution.

The other thing I will be researching is the ability to post pictures while in Spain. I fear this will be difficult because of the need to use public computers. I am not aware of a way to download pictures directly to the blog. There may be a way to bypass downloading them to a public computer by using a service of some sort and I will do all I can to figure out a way for you to be able to post pictures while away. The text portion is not a problem.

I love you all and I'm sorry to rain on the parade a bit.

OUR MASCOT, THE BULL? NOT!!!!!

This morning when I was walking, we went past a herd of cows with what I thought was a bull (the black one). I told my friend that I was going to come back and take a picture of the bull to post. By the time I got back to take the picture, it was very evident that it was a cow....not a bull!

beauty

My sister-in-law has a passion for gardening.
So since I don't have a green thumb I enjoy seeing her's when we visit IN.

My plan in spain is to sketch flowers I see and then try to paint them when I arrive home in Oct.

I'll post some sketches on Liz's Lovelies blog while in Spain, so check in and see what flowers I'm seeing in Spain.

To see my blog just click on Liz'sLovelies at the side bar on this post. Or click here

Fran's arrival time

Sage Video

Goat reminded me this morning I didn't send a picture of Sage from AZ. Better than a pic I'm sending a video of her crawling at seven months!!!!!! I'm back in Columbia and had a nice walk in 60 degree weather- sooooo much better than the 90's in AZ.

TWO WEEKS from today we are off on our adventure!!!! BRING IT ON!!!!!

Stuff

Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups Of Coffee.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full..They agreed it was.The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.'The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided,'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions--things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter likeyour job, house, and car.The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.So... pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children.Take time to get medical checkups.Take your partner out to dinner.Play another 18.There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.'Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter.Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked'.It just goes to show you that no matter how full yourlife may seem, there's always room for a couple ofcups of coffee with a friend.'

Yard of the Month

Congratulations Maureen and Lyle. "A yard of beauty is a joy forever"

Can't wait

Did I mention it will be nice to get away from work? I won't be posting for probably several days. Got a big "project" to finish up...oh yeah, that's hit a rough spot. Thank god for the Cafe. That's where I have Roger take me out to eat on Mondays and rough spot days. It soothes my soul and is the only thing that gets me through each Monday. Maybe Spain could be like Sanibel in that ...(see above) but forget that. I need to know when Sunday is for that hotel carrot.

Ideas?

The Olympic torch has been lit and the games have begun. Trying to be a team/fun/non-gestapo pilgrim on the Camino, I was wondering if a team cheer each morning would be ok. But what would it be? I'm clueless here in Boone. I've never been in a team huddle. What about a team mascot, team captain, team coach, team colors. Of course our team is Team Ladies of Spain (LOS). Our event is the Camino. But what about that cheer........

PCR #4

The ice cream picture made me think of another reflection question...Is there any food you're looking forward to trying in Spain? Maybe something you've read about, maybe something you've had in the states but want the authentic experience? Is there any food from home you think you'll miss and want to replace, maybe a favorite ice cream from Cold Stone?

I JOINED THE MORNING PEOPLE

I had my early morning walk today, it was very nice.

In the photo,

I'm the one knitting.

Let's see, Goat you're the one with the ice cream cone.

Fran you're the one telling the story.

Mariann you're also eating ice cream.

PCB update.......

Switched to moleskin before my walk this morning - felt great during and after my walk!!
I would suggest everyone put a little moleskin and blister RX in your pack- better to be prepared than sorry. MY plans for the day are to play with Sage while Cary organizes her office.
Three weeks from today we take our first of many steps on the Camino!!!!!!

PPCBR

That would be Post PreCamino Blister Reflection. Anybody have one?

Oh, oh. Me. Me.

Why would the oldest and medically wisest end up with the first ever blister? ....Pause to reflect now!

Golf

I thought that would get your attention. While walking today, I passed by a golf course and there were these round things sticking out of the ground. What are they for? I tried to get a picture but it was pretty far away so you can't see them much.

The dreaded "B".....

It finally happened- I got a BLISTER!!!! The Hot-spot on my heel turned out to be a blister- I covered it with a "Spyoflex blister dressing"(sold in packs of 5 for $5) and during my walk this morning it popped and caused me no discomfort. The dressing could be cut to cover a toe B too. I'm looking at it as a PC "B"-my experience will allow for better C "B's" treatment. I'l keep you posted on the B saga- (Vince, if you're reading this , I could send you a photo !!).
My AZ walk was great- only in the 80's at 6am.

Short list

As I go thru my plan for the day, I am thinking of my fellow pilgrims who I know will not be reading this post right away. Why? Because, they are in training and already have hit their home trails before the heat of the day gets unbearable. So to you, cheers and hurrahs. You're almost done. Hang in there.

My list consists of work to do's (of course) and watching the Olympics. I feel a kindred spirit with them. I look forward to watching their goals be tested. God bless America.

Fran's AZ pcr,ppcpr,tdpc,andoppcp......

Goat, I laughed so much I p-i-m-pants!!!! This pcr , pocr is way too confusing-

I couldn't resist the title for my blog. The photo is the card Sage gave me on my arrival here in AZ. Click on it to see it better- Cary is so talented. I was also presented with a tag for my backpack- a photo of Sage and Georgia!!

It was only 106 today, I'll see how my walk goes tomorrow.

It's Official

I am done with my training period. I am now into my quasi-camino phase. I now am walking in a relaxed-camino way, meandering thru my neck of the woods, gazing at the flowers, checking the exterior design of the houses I pass, looking at the clouds and trees and shadows being cast by the sun. My walking sticks are now my gawking/walking/rhythm sticks. I am one with nature and my being. Oh what bliss.

Which reminds me. There is a very big problem looming in the future. If PCR is an acronym for "pre-camino reflections" what do we do with post-camino reflections? And what about post-camino reflections from a prior camino? Which is what I'm going to reflect on right now.

My post-camino reflection from a prior camino (PoCRPC?) was at the tale end of the journey. My sister had promised we'd stay at a hotel that night. But as is the Camino's way, it didn't exists in the town that was our night's stop. So, being in a real pissy/grumpy mood I was not paying attention as I went to take my shower. The girls were to the left/the boys to the right. But there was no door between the two. So here I am, getting out of the shower having already very carefully put on my clothes after taking my shower (I put them on while I'm actually still in the shower) only to turn to my left and see a totally naked, old man who was white as a sheet and his back was not turned to me. BOY, was I now really not happy with my lot in life. What do I do to calm down? I go to my bunk and try to relax. While I'm trying, I gaze up at the ceiling (because I never look to the right or left.....don't know and don't care who's by me) only to be staring at this bunch of black stuff. You guessed it......mold. WELL, that was it. I now knew I was going to die in the night inhaling the black stuff (when if I had gotten my hotel room this all never would have happened). But I thought, there's no dead bodies piled up in the corner so it must be ok. So I fell asleep. End of PoCRPC.

Quote Book

Jo-Jo has given a great idea that loved ones of the pilgrims can write a little something on a small piece of paper so it can be read during the walks or at rest times. I know there's at least one sister that plans to keep a journal. Another thing that some travelers and families find fun to keep is a quote book. I have been at several family events where everyone is laughing great big belly laughs and, at times, have a hard time breathing. It's not always clear what started these episodes but sometimes it's something that's said that everyone finds hilarious. It would be a great thing to share on the blog while you're on the trip, short and sweet. Just something to think about.

PCR #!*

I've had it with training. I want to do it.

Thanks for listening.

PCR #3

I have another lovely Pre Camino Reflection question for you. Refugios.....love 'em, hate 'em, dread 'em, what's your take. I know Goat and Fran will have interesting input because they've experienced them first hand. Mariann and Liz, strategies for showering, avoiding naked people, or anything else? Are their tactics for sleeping in a room full of strangers? Are there certain behaviors to be avoided? What would you tell people that are considering the trek for the first time? Do tell.

New Boots?

Fran, how are the new boots after a couple of walks? Have you wore them for a full walk yet? Maybe you're in Phoenix right now but I suspect that you'll still be walking.

Secure and Unsecure Sites

Well, it's been awhile since I offered a Tech Tip. This one is appropriate given Fran's recent problem with loading the comment page. When the pop-up comes on your screen warning you that a site may contain secure and unsecure items, you are given the option to ignore the warning. You should also have the option to never remind you again. Choose that option. If you want to know whether a site is secure or not, look at the url. That's the field at the top of the screen where you can type in www.website'sname.com. When a site is secure it will start with https://www. The "s" means it's secure. This blog starts with http://ladiesofspain.blogspot.com. It is not a secure site. Anytime you order something online, check your bank info, or do a transaction of sorts, that website should have and "s" and be secure so your information is safe.

Hope that is helpful.

Flicks

Who's seen "The Bucket List"? Any Sanibel sisters, please respond also.

Tech Mama pic

Ann , the only time I get the annoying pop-up is on the comment sites that have your pic attached to yout comment. Could the addition of a pic with a comment cause it to be non-secure? Thanks again for all your tech advise- I am becoming more computer-friendly with each passing day!!

Maiden Voyage!

Just came back from my maiden voyage in my new boots-just did one hr. in them and then
switched to my old pair for second hr. I love them! Felt like I was walking on pillows!

TECH MAMA: how come I now get that irritating box that says "site may contain non secure...."
when I go to the comment site on a blog? I have to click on it twice to get it to go away.

Back in the loop

The week went by like the blink of an eye. Brad and family were unable to join us, but we had a great time with Brian and Katy and their kids. I would highly recommend the Poconos for a family vacation......we didn't do half of what there is to do there. Would have liked to get to Bushkill Falls to do the trail walk there, but it didn't fit into the schedule.

I can't believe that it's August already!!!! In less than three weeks, Rich and I will be leaving from here to go to a wedding in NJ, then I'll drive with him to Ohio, and will fly to Chicago on the 26th. And then we're off on our great adventure!!!!

I took one really good walk that made me feel like maybe that might be what the Camino would be like.....through woods, on gravel and paving both, and with ups and downs. Wished that I'd had my poles with me to practice.

Sounds like everyone has kicked into high gear and I'm ready to join that group. Have decided that I am not going to weigh and measure, just make sure that I'm only taking what I think I need and what I can comfortably carry. I am one of those "ignorance is bliss" proponents. I took a bike ride this afternoon because it's so hot and I want to strengthen my leg muscles, so I pedalled for 1 1/2 miles straight....got a burn going! I'll head out to walk tomorrow...early.

There was sooo much to catch up to on the blog......I am so glad that we have our Tech Mama. Thank you for getting us going and keeping us tech savvy.

New boots!!!

Success in St. Louis @ REI's yesterday. I was patiently quizzed, measured (sitting and standing), fitted, adjusted and put through a maze of manuvers and ultimately deemed a successful boot match for my feet by Robert! He spent over an hour with me and at one point a woman who was standing next to him commented to me about the boots and asked me if they were for hiking . She said they would have been great for the walk she did in Spain.
"Do you mean the Camino?" I said.
"Yes, I walked it in 2004. " she replied.
SMALL WORLD!!!! She and her husband walked from St. Jean, France to Santiago in 28 days!!!! They were supposed to walk again this year, but she broke her ankle last winter and couldn't do it. It was encouraging to hear from someone that had completed 475 miles in 28 days!! Maybe the "Ladies of Spain" will have a shot at more mileage!

Saturday, August 2, 2008

I did it!

Got that 4 hour walk in today. It went well. I have to make sure I'm putting the pack at my hips, it does make a difference, thanks!
And thanks for that stretch, tech mama!
And I took a lighter pack for the long walk.

Miles

Each will be accounted for. I took a test run (walk) and the read out on the pedometer is accurate. But boy are my feet killing me! My plans are to notate at the end of each day the distance and time we walk. My trail is flat except for my hill and I did 3mph. Went 12miles. I was going to go longer but my water ran out. My pee was very light colored so I was well hydrated.

Pictures of that stretch

Okay ladies. I'm not glammed up or anything, but you get the picture of the stretch. First you put one leg (my left leg in the picture) at a 90 degree angle. Bent the other leg and try to stretch that leg behind you. You can see the right leg does not have a 90 degree bend to it.

Next, you lean back as far as you can. You'll feel the stretch in your abdomen and in the quad of the leg that is on the floor. Switch legs and repeat the stretch. If you're like me, one side will be tighter than the other.

SITE FOR GREAT PICS OF CAMINO!!

I'm going to attempt to hyperlink this web site : www.santiago-compostela.net . When you're in click on English and then the Frances Camino and up will pop 32 stages of the walk with each one showing great pics of the terrain, architecture etc. It would be a great site to share with family and friends!!
It's August so I bumped up my walks to 2hrs. as per my training schedule. It was hot and humid, but my body felt great. Will add pack in a few days.
Marian- I assume you're still in the Poconos vacationing with family. Hope you were able to get some great hikes in.

August

Finally!
